Atlanta 34 San Diego 28 OT
Andre Rison |
San Diego takes 3rd Q opening drive to mid field then punts and traps Atlanta at their 4 yard line. Atlanta goes 96 yards on 11 plays, the big play a 40 yard screen pass to Heyward, to take a seemingly insurmountable 28-7 lead. As the 3rd quarter winds down the game changes on 2 long Humphries' passes. First he hits Jefferson for 23, then on the very next play tosses a 42 yard TD bomb to Martin and after 3 , it is 28-14. The 4th Quarter is ALL San Diego. SD has a long drive stall on a 4th down, but score a quick Defensive TD as George(bad George in 4th Q) is strip sacked and the fumble is returned all the way to the house and SD is suddenly within 7. Atlanta then punts it right back. Humphries quickly hits TE Mitchell for a huge 43 yard gain, and 3 plays later tosses a TD strike to Jefferson and we are TIED at 28 with just under 3 to go! Atlanta has a drive stall and punts to SD who also stall and we head to OT.
Atlanta gets the ball to start OT. Atlanta starts from the 11. They move down to their 48 on crisp short passes, when disaster appears to strike..on 1st down SD blitzes 3 and Whitfield (All-Pro) commits his 3rd hold of the game. Then just as quickly the game ends as George hits Rison on a medium cross and Rison will not be caught and goes 62 yards for the victory!
Final: Atlanta 34-28 in OT

George was 30 of 37 for 385 yards and 4 TD's. Mathis and Rison also had huge games, Mathis 12 for 176, 2TD's and Rison 9 for 111, 1 TD. They would have to be as Atlanta could not run the ball at all...and mid way through 4th lost Heywood and had NO running backs. The Raidas were led by harvey Williams 18 rushes for 90 yards.

Each team took long scoring Field goal drives to account for entire 3rd and part of 4th Q. Atlanta would then go on a 7 minute scoring drive to go up 10...and hold on after another frenetic 5 minutes. Definately a fun game.
Atlanta wins 30-19
Thanks again to Bruce Thomas for subbing.

LA tries an onside kick but Atlanta recovers and gets 3 on the drive. George and Atlanta are driving again with a nice lead when the BONEHEAD (George) throws a horrible pass and it is picked by Pope and returned all the way to Atl. 20, Miller hits Hester and it is once again a 5 point game. In the early 4th on 3rd and 3, George goes deep to Rison and connects on a 55 yard TD, and Atlanta fans begin to relax. On the next posession George hits Mathis for 19 yard TD pass, and Atlanta wins 38-19.

6 @ San Diego 24
Two teams who didn't expect to be here clashed in San Diego.
San Diego started the scoring with a 9 yard TD pass from Stan Humphries to Anthony Miller. The Dolphins pulled the game close on two field goals by Pete Stoyanovich. John Carney was able to put a kick through with 31 seconds in the half to put SD up 10-7. On the ensuing kickoff, OJ McDuffie fumbled the return giving the Chargers another scoring chance. Humphries hit Nate Lewis for 20 yards to extend the lead to 17-7.
The second half was pretty quiet with the only scoring coming from another Humpries to Lewis TD. The final score was 24-6.
Great season by Gary and the Dolphins.

Week 19: WILD CARD PLAYOFF Results
19 New Orleans 10 at San Francisco 18
The game was tight, as the Saints defense played stout most of the game. Good
drives by Wade Wilson came close to scoring but were stymied by TO's or
penalties. Jerry Rice proves to be a Titan among men in this one. Congrats to
Keith White on making the playoffs and a fun season.
19 Buffalo 14 at Denver

Denver won 17-14 over Buffalo in a thrilling first round matchup at Mile High
stadium. This one was epic!
After a scoreless first quarter, the two teams traded touchdowns as Robert Delpino ran one in for Denver and Thurman Thomas duplicated the feat for Buffalo. In a harbinger of things to come, the Thomas touchdown was set up by a 46 yard bomb from Jim Kelly to Andre Reed. More on that later.
Denver put together an 11 play, 6+ minute drive in the 3rd quarter capped by Delpino's second touchdown to give Denver a 14-7 lead. The score remained there until late in the 4th quarter. Denver put together a 7:40 drive that finally stalled on Buffalo's 17 with a little over 2:00 left in the game. Denver lined up for what was likely to be the game deciding field goal, but incredibly holder Tommy Maddox couldn't handle the snap and Buffalo had a chance.
Buffalo mixed runs and a couple short passes to reach their own 44 yard line with only 23 seconds left. Buffalo switched to a 5 wr formation, Denver countered with a dime defense, and Kelly took the snap. Incredibly Copeland caught a 56 yard bomb from Kelly to tie the score.
Buffalo won the coin flip but their initial drive stalled in OT. Denver mixed short passes with Delpino and Rivers runs to advance to Buffalo's 9, when a Jason Elam 26-yard field goal won the game for Denver.
Thomas and Delpino both reached 100 yards. Pundits expecting an offensive show from the two explosive offenses were proven wrong, as the gritty battle evolved into a defensive struggle instead.
Great game called by Paul.

The Raiders came into Joe Robbie Stadium and on their first possession went 43
yards in one play on a Hostetler to Jett 43 yard TD pass to take a 7-0 lead.
Miami answered with a 7 play 74 yard drive ending with a Mark Higgs 3 yard TD run to tie the game 7-7.
LA mounted a long 6+ minute 12 play 79 yard drive with Hoestetler hitting Horton on a 2 yd TD pass, however, Chuck Klingbeil blocked the PAT and the Raiders had a 13-7 lead, the missed PAT would loom large for LA.
After a Miami punt LA scored another TD on a Hoestetler to Steve Smith 6 yard scoring strike to give the Raiders a 20-7 advantage.
On the next drive Miami went 72 yards in 3:41 to cut the lead to 20-14 at the half.
Miami got their first lead in the 3rd on a Mitchell to Ingram 16 yard pass 21-20.
The Raiders regained the lead with 10:18 left in the 4th on another Hoestetler to Jett TD pass, this one a 66 yard bomb. 27-21
Miami responded with another Mitchell to Ingram TD pass to take a 28-27 lead.
After trading punts, LA took over on their own 6 with :59 remaining and down by 1. Bryan Cox sealed the victory with a pick-6 to give Miami the 35-27 victory.
