Denver Remains Sharp(e)

Denver 31 San Diego 24
Shannon Sharpe and the Broncos move on to the
Super Bowl to face Dallas.

In their 3rd matchup of the season, the Broncos finally found the Chargers' measure and defeated them 34-24 in the AFC Championship game in San Diego. The Broncos were led by John Elway's 272 yards passing and 3 touchdown passes. Derek Russell and Shannon Sharpe each caught 9 passes with a touchdown. The Chargers duo of Stan Humphries and Anthony Miller hooked up for 10 receptions, 3 touchdowns, and 148 yards in the losing effort.

The Broncos came out strong, inspired by the pregame speech by injured running back Rod Bernstine. The Broncos took a 14-0 lead after their first 2 possessions, and led 21-10 at the half. The Chargers then scored the next 17 points to take a 24-21 lead. Jason Elam kicked a 49 yard field goal to tie the game in the 3rd.

In the 4th the Broncos strung together a 13 play, 65 yard drive, capped by an Elway touchdown pass to backup TE Reggie Johnson, to take a 31-24 lead. After San Diego turned the ball over on downs, the Broncos kicked another field goal to take a 10 point lead. San Diego drove down the field on their last drive, but Carney missed a long field goal and the Broncos held on to win.
